India is the world’s second largest producer of rice (122 million tonnes) after China. But even the third highest producing country, Indonesia, produces less than one-third of India.
Basmati and non-basmati varieties are mostly produced during Kharif season. Rice production rose by 15 per cent from FY 14 to FY 21. Rice has more than four-fifth share in India's total cereals export.
